Medicinal Uses of Castor Oil

Less than 50 years ago, a tablespoon of castor oil was commonly used whenever someone was ill to make it all better. Many of our elders today can still recall vividly the taste of castor oil, and its side effects. Many think it’s that same laxative side effect that is all castor oil is good for, but that is very much not the case.

The Castor Oil - An Overview

Castor oil patches can be used as an effective treatment for a variety of stomach ailments as well as arthritis pain and to help the lymph system.

Many people are unfamiliar with the lymph system and what is does in the body. The lymph system removes toxins from throughout the body. Understandably a blockage can cause a build up of toxins in the body causing everything from general lack of energy to any number of cancers. To use castor oil to boost the lymph system or as part of a detoxification for the body you can either use a castor oil pack (directions to follow) on areas of edema, or swelling caused by a build up of fluids under the skin.

These patches can also be applied to the abdomen and topped with a heating pad to treat everything from menstrual cramps to gas. Make sure to rub the stomach in a clockwise direction as this helps regulate the flow of the large intestines and digestive tracts as a whole. If a young baby is colicky, you can massage a small amount of castor oil warmed between the palms very gently on the baby’s stomach as well.

If suffering from back pain, castor oil applied along the spine either as a patch and/or massaged in will greatly help to lubricate the joints and release built up toxins to pack a one two punch. Packs along with a heat treatment can also be applied to sore joints for similar effect.

Instructions

To make a castor oil patch, you need high quality organic castor oil, flannel or cotton, plastic such as a clean garbage bag cut into a size large enough to cover the treatment area, tape, and a water bottle filled with comfortably hot water. Soak the material in the castor oil and apply to the affected area. Cover with the plastic and tape down if applicable (don’t apply tape on or near the hairline, for example) apply the hot water bottle toe warm and increase the effect.  Repeat with a new warm bottle as needed. If applying to an area difficult to use the water bottle such as the forehead you can microwave a damp towel for 20 seconds to a minute depending on size to cover the plastic and repeat as desired. An overnight application is often best.

With many people shying away from the side effects of modern medicine, perhaps a natural approach with castor oil can improve your health and well-being. As with anything, it is best that you check with your doctor before using a castor oil compress to heal any serious or recurring ailments.
